Playing Chess Online
Carlson Parents / Kids - please read: The World Chess Network is a wonderful way to experience playing online Chess. There are a few things you should know before you venture off and begin play.
First, you have to setup an account. There is an option that asks if you want to receive information (spam) so you may want to select "never". You may be asked this twice, so be looking for it and make sure you select what you want here.
Second, after you have filled in all the necessary information, there is a download that takes about 3 minutes with a DSL line, about 20 minutes with 56K. It's very well written and those that have downloaded it report it to be very seemless.
Third. After you have installed the software, you will notice that your screen defaults to a Chess Chat Room. You can actually change your settings by choosing "I'm not available". To do this, click on the "My WCN" button in the upper right hand corner and scroll to the bottom for the selection.
Fourth. You have 15 days free to view ALL features. After 15 days, you can select from bronze, silver, or gold memberships. They are actually very reasonable. An entire year of bronze is only $9.95. There are comparisons you will find as you look around, so if you decide to continue there will be plenty of information to help you make that decision.
Fifth. If you decide to join, let us know! We'll post a page of those kids from Alice Carlson that are members so that it will be fun and easy to arrange to play against each other. We can also setup our chats so that we are calling "Friends" and customize the experience to be around Alice Carlson kids.
Last. The best thing to do is to try it for free for 15 days and really look around. Remember, you've got access to tutorials, tournaments, etc so take advantage of it all! I think you will be very impressed with this sites quality. - Ken Dorsey
